Bright Mountain Solar
PROJECT SUMMARY
The Bright Mountain Solar Project (Project), is an up-to 80 megawatt (MW) solar facility mostly located on the reclaimed site of a former coal mine in Perry County, Kentucky. The Project will produce solar-powered electricity that will maximize energy production from available solar resources in order to deliver clean, renewable electricity to Kentucky customers. The Project will consist of photovoltaic panels, along with access roads, underground electric collection cables, a collection substation, inverters, a transmission line to deliver electricity to the grid, and an agricultural-style perimeter fence.
SCHEDULE
The Project Area of approximately 805 acres is comprised of multiple tracts of reclaimed mine land; however, in most instances, the project fence line would be designed to avoid steep slopes creating natural buffer between the project boundary and the project fence line. As a part of the acquisition of land and land rights, outreach was conducted to landowners and community leaders throughout the Project Area vicinity. The Project will also include an approximately 4-mile-long transmission line that connects the Facility substation to the regional electrical grid. The point of interconnection will be at the existing Bonnyman Substation along Typo Road.
Two public information meetings were held at West Perry Elementary School in Hazard, Kentucky on September 7, 2022 and August 22, 2023. At these meetings, Bright Mountain Solar representatives were available to answer questions and give brief presentations about the Project. The Project submitted an application for a construction certificate to the Kentucky State Board on Electric Generation and Transmission Siting on September 15, 2023 and received approval from the Board in March of 2024.
Final designs for the Project are underway, and construction is anticipated to begin as early as the 4th quarter of 2025. Construction would be completed within approximately two years, at which point the Bright Mountain Solar Project will be placed in service and will begin delivering power to the grid.
